One of 25 Eagle grade 20 bores made with 26" barrels out of a total for all barrel lengths of 76. This gun has all correct markings on tops of barrels and barrel flats. There are sprays of scroll engraving around breech ends. Case hardened action with automatic safety and double triggers is engraved in typical "Eagle" grade style with 60% coverage scroll surrounding bird scenes semi relief engraved on lockplates; flying pheasant with very long tail is on left, and mallard in flight is on right. A perched eagle is in semi relief on top lever. The semi relief engraving on this grade was quite unusual for a gun of its price, and was fairly popular because of its attractive qualities. "L. C. Smith" is in script on each lockplate. Blued trigger guard with scroll on bow has serial number on tang. Pistol grip buttstock of nicely crotch figured American walnut measures 14 - 3/8" over ribbed composition buttplate over 1/2" hard rubber spacer. Point pattern checkering wraps over top of grip and grip cap is of hard rubber. Matching splinter ejector forend with inlet ebony tip has typical J-spring and knurled button release in guitar shaped steel escutcheon. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a quality, possibly factory re-black. Action retains 30 - 40% original case hardening color with some flecking and browning on bottom, silvered on high edges and fences. Lockplates retain perhaps 30% original color, turning to silvery brown. Stocks retain most of their original finish with many scratches and marks, one or two fairly deep. Checkering worn. There is a 1/2" stress crack behind right lockplate. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Ejectors are in time. This gun has been consigned to us from family in New England where it has resided for 3 generations. It is as fresh to the market as a spring daisy! A lively gun, perfect for quail or woodcock. MGM 171 CORRECTION: This gun was built on a featherweight frame.
