(1928) The .425 was a Westley Richards proprietary cartridge designed to compete with the .404 Jeffery and .416 Rigby. It achieved a fine reputation for use on African dangerous game. This rifle has 26" tapered round barrel engraved "Westley Richards & Co London" on top. One standing, four folding leaf express rear sight is in heavy sleeved on island base and silver bead front sight is in typical Westley Richards sleeved on ramp with flip-over bead protector. A sling eye is soldered to bottom of barrel. Standard length Model 98 Mauser action has stippled receiver ring with left side engraved "Westley Richards .425 Magnum" "Express". Standard bolt shroud has flag safety engraved "SAFE". Action has been fitted with unique to Westley Richards hinged deep box magazine with lever release. Magazine is of late style accepting a straight stack of cartridges controlled by spring loaded fingers. Magazine is complete with its original checkered horn shroud. Trigger is of double pull type. Horn capped pistol grip stock of nicely marbled European walnut measures 15" over open sided White Line pad and features shadow line right hand cheekpiece, horn forend tip, and point pattern checkering at grip and forend. Sunburst horn grip cap has coin removable central plug with space underneath holding spare front sights. Kenya registration numbers are stamped behind grip cap on toe line, which also has a vacant silver oval and sling eye. Weight: 9 lbs 8 oz. CONDITION: Good, as refinished. Metal parts retain over 95% hot blue over light pitting, marks and scratches. There are couple of areas with fairly deep pits, most notably on right side of receiver ring. Stock retains most of an old oil refinish with sanding marks. Checkering appears to have been re-run before this finish was applied. Bore is very fine to excellent, with some very light frosting in grooves, and a bit of erosion at throat. Action is smooth. This rifle is worthy of a "best" restoration. MGM 151
