Early 17th century, 61" overall. Weighs 43 pounds, massive swamped octagonal 44" iron barrel, smoothbore of .80 caliber. Fitted decorative brass and iron sight. The massive lock with period etching adorned with masks, internal wheel. Entire inside of lock profusely engraved with scrolls and faces. Molded and figured oak full length stock with beautiful 17th century patination and original plain wooden sliding patchbox decorated with shell carving. Original engraved steel triggerguard. Iron rest on butt. Complete with original horn-tipped ramrod. Overall, very good condition for its period, cheekpiece with inset of the period and one longitudinal crack on opposite side of stock, otherwise, wood is very good with some scattered marks and small chips. Iron components patinated with dry oil and have some scattered pitting, mostly on face of lock. A very scarce and exceptional large period wheellock! From the Walter O'Connor collection.
