Lot contains: (A) King George II, DS dated 9 August 1759, 1 page, party-printed parchment sheet, 9 7/8 x 13 3/4 inches, bearing royal seal and stamps, docketed on recto, slight separations at folds, slight staining in spots, otherwise very good. Royal appointment of "William Ogilvie, Gent[leman]" as "Captain, in our Corps of Highlanders commanded by Our Trusty and Welbeloved Major Commandant Robert Murray Keith." Keith's Highlanders was initially raised at Perth in August 1759 by regimenting three companies detached from the 2nd Battalion of the 42nd Foot or Black Watch. The corps was immediately dispatched to Germany, where it fought at Warburg and Villinghausen and subsequently expanded to a single-battalion regiment and numbered the 87th Foot in 1760. The regiment returned to Scotland from the continent in late 1762, and was disbanded at Perth in July 1763. (B) Lieutenant Governor William Denny of Pennsylvania, partly-printed DS dated 7 June 1759, 1 page, parchment sheet, 8 1/4 x 14 3/4 inches, some fading to ink, folds, otherwise good. William Patterson is appointed "Captain of a Company in the First Battalion of the Pennsylvania Regiment." Patterson formerly a 2nd lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, is commanded "to take the said Company into your Charge...and duly to exercise as well the Officers as Soldiers thereof in Arms, and...keep them in good Order and Discipline...." Patterson (1737-1782) was originally commissioned an ensign in the 3rd or Augusta Battalion of the regiment on 14 May 1757 and was promoted to lieutenant on 12 December 1757.
