LACEY, John (1755-1814) as brigadier general, autograph letter signed, to President Thomas Wharton, Supreme Council of Pennsylvania, dated Doyles Town, 8 April 1778, one page, folio, addressed and docketed on recto. With two early booklets (1860 and 1908) on the battle of Crooked Billet, fought 1 May 1778. 3 items.
Lacey informs President Wharton that "My little party is at the [Crooked] Billet [where] I am trying some Philad[elphi]a. Market men by a court Martial, & hope soon to give you an account of their receiving the just Merits of their malignant crimes.... News has this moment arrived from below that a large part of the Enemy came last night to Smithfield, and made Prisoners a small party of Continental Troops under the command of Capt. Henderson [ ] it is also said they are moving up towards the Buck, I have ordered some of the Horse down to learn the certainty of this news."
A native of Buckingham Township , John Lacey Jr. was a Continental Army captain in Anthony Wayne's regiment during the Canadian campaign of 1776. The following year, he fought with distinction at Germantown and Matson's Ford as lieutenant colonel with the Bucks County militia. He gained such a reputation for skill and courage that the Supreme Executive promoted him to brigadier general in the state militia on 9 January 1778.
