MONROE, James, as President of the United States, partially-printed document signed, to "Henry Bedinger, dated Washington, DC , 11 March 1817, parchment sheet (15 1/4 x 11 3/4 in.), some staining on folds, wax seal mostly gone, ink text moderate to light. Bedinger, "a Captain for three years" in the Virginia Continental Line, is given 200 acres in the Virginia Military District in Ohio for his Revolutionary War services. Henry Bedinger, Jr. (1753-1843) entered service in Captain Hugh Stevenson's company of riflemen in June 1775 and was captured at the Battle of Fort Washington in November 1776, remaining a prisoner of war for four years. In 1784, he married Rachel Strode in Berkeley County, Virginia and settled in Shepherdstown, where they had several children. From the Walter O'Connor collection.
