This well built rifle has 23 - 5/8" dovetailed barrels fitted with full length broad matted rib, raised front portion forming ramp holding large red painted bead. Rear portion is fitted with claw bases. Unmatted portion at center is engraved "L. Schiwy Berlin S. W. 68". Barrels are also fitted with unusual Schiwy patented rear sight with central large U-shaped notch flanked by triangular openings on sides use of which allows built in lead for running driven game. This sight is marked "D. R. P. L. Schiwy Berlin" and has been found on a number of rifles owned by Hermann Goering, and it appears that Schiwy was one of his favorite gunsmiths. Barrel flats are stamped with July 1932 German nitro proofs for 8 x 57 with subsequent post war Hannover Proof House marks for 8/65RS. Coin finished sidelock action with remnants of gold wash overall, is stocked to the fences and features non-automatic safety, hidden third fastener, bushed strikers, raised arrowhead tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers (both set). Action is engraved with 60% coverage well cut Germanic scroll. Trigger guard is of horn. Stock of dense stump figured and nicely marbled European walnut measures 14 - 3/4" over thick horn ribbed buttplate. Stock features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, and flush inlet lozenge shaped horn drop points. A gold washed rectangular silver presentation plate behind cheekpiece is engraved "E K" "Mit Waidmannsheil" "Hermann Goering" (in script signature). Similar presentation plaques have been noted on other Goering associated rifles. Most of the buttstock has been carved in Germanic style by a less than talented individual, with game scenes, oak leaves, and acorns. Left side has a stag pursuing two hinds. The entire right side is taken up by relief scene of battling European elk (moose). Oak leaves and acorns have been carved into checkering at grip. Matching splinter ejector forend with inset horn tip, has Deeley release and has not been carved. Rifle is mounted with B. Nickel 1 - 4 X scope with three post and crosshair reticle in soldered on claw rings, rear with windage. Weight without scope: 8 lbs 3 oz. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refinished. Barrels have old "best" re-black with subsequent wear mostly on sides. Action is mostly bright polish with perhaps 10% gold wash remaining. Stocks have some of what appears to be their original surfaces, some oil added after newer carving. Bores are very fine, strong rifling throughout, with slight erosion at throats. Action is tight with forend installed. Right barrel is somewhat off face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Set triggers work. Scope is fine, optically clear. MGM 149.
