Footlocker for a Confederate 5th Georgia Volunteer in very good condition. The top of the locker is roughly hand carved with "Co. A", "Georgia 5th Vol.", and the name "J.S. Barrels". The carvings appear to have been done with a knife and have been painted over with a chalky red. The edges of the footlocker are dovetailed with a few areas that have been repaired with nails. The interior of the trunk is lined with newspapers dating to "July 12, 1862" which are from the "Harpers Weekly". The front of the trunk is carved with "Macon, GA". There is also a simple keyhole on the front which is for a locking mechanism fastened inside the locker. It is not known for certain if this footlocker is attributed to the name carved on it, or even the unit, however we believe this locker to be the property of J.S. Barrels who was part of the 5th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. A brief internet search gives great and detailed history of the Clinch Rifles and their service throughout the war. The importance of this unit cannot be understated and this footlocker is certainly near unique.
EXTREMELY RARE CONFEDERATE 5TH GEORGIA VOLUNTEERS FOOT LOCKER- LIKELY THE PROPERTY OF CONFEDERATE SOLDIER J.S. BARRELS- PART OF THE FAMED "CLINCH RIFLES" INFANTRY UNIT
