In 1968, Colt chose to commemorate the first World War by producing a commemorative Model 1911 in remembrance of the four most noted battles of World War I. Total standard production for each Model was 7,400 guns. These were all Pre-Series 70 Models. For accuracy they were made with flat mainspring housing, long triggers, checkered slide stop and safety, and checkered wide spur hammers, and the Type II beveled proper rear sight. The Battle of Belleau Wood features the high polish blue finish with the smooth rosewood grips and the commemorative medallion and tag. None of these pistols appear to have ever been fired. Each is housed in its special wood display case with a description of the battle, in this case "US victory at Belleau Wood. Saved Paris from occupation." The left side of slide has a roll engraved battle scene and the right side has the World War I banner with the dates "1917-1967", the 50th anniversary of our entering the war.
