This is probably one of the best, highest grade, militia officer's swords in existence. The sword features a double edged tapered steel blade with partial fuller in center on each side and both sides with 18-1/2" etched panels of decoration. The right side decorated with foliate scrolls, arms motifs, and a patriotic American eagle. The opposite side decorated en suite with a liberty cap and flags. Gilt brass crossguard with integral languettes. Both sides chased with a detailed eagle with spread wings and both quillons decorated with shells on top. The pommel features a seated eagle with head held down and a patriotic shield on its breast. The one piece bone grip is ornately carved with panels of decoration including shell designs and wedding bands. Complete with its original decorated gilt brass scabbard, profusely engraved with foliate decoration on a shaded ground. The left side is devoid of any decoration and is stamped with Ames markings near the throat. CONDITION: Excellent, blade retains nearly all of original polish with one nick to edge and a few minor areas of discoloration. Hilt retains approximately 95-98% original gilt finish with some high edge wear, pommel is slightly loose. Scabbard retains nearly all of its original finish with some areas of darker patina around mounts. This is an extremely attractive and high grade example. From the Jim Linton Collection
