This nearly pristine example features a slightly curved polished steel blade with two partial fullers and etched panels on each side. The right side is decorated with scrolls, an American eagle and stands of arms. Etched near the ricasso "Ames Mfg Co/ Chicopee/ Mass". The other side shows arms motifs, scrolls and a large "U.S.". Right side of ricasso stamped "J.H." and left side dated 1862. Standard hilt with pierced guard and chased scrollwork and florals. Grip wrapped with black sharkskin and decorated with twisted gilt brass wire. Complete with original blued steel scabbard with gilt brass mounts of standard form. Top mount stamped with Ames manufacturing marks on left side. CONDITION: Excellent. This is considered to be one of the finest examples known. Blade retains nearly 100% of its original polish and shows only some light scabbard wear. Hilt and mounts retains approximately 95-98% original gilt finish with some light wear and thinning on edges. Scabbard is excellent and retains nearly all its original finishes. From the Jim Linton Collection
