Lot contains: A) TRYON, George W., noted gunmaker and founder of Tryon, Son & Company ,Gun Manufacturers (1836-1841). Autograph document signed (ADS), 1 page, docketed on recto, dated 17 February 1841, Philadelphia. A large and handsome, partially-printed document, 22 x 16 1/4 inches (two joined folio sheets of laid paper), being an Indenture of Mortgage "BETWEEN George W. Tryon of the Northern Liberties of the City of Philadelphia[,] Gun Manufacturer of the one part and John Frederick Schmidt...Hair Dresser" in which the latter agrees to loan the former $1000 "lawful Silver Money" with interest for the period of one year, the collateral to be a "certain Two Story Brick Messuage or Tenement and Lot...situate on the East side of Marshall Street", within the Spring Garden District of Penn Township." The document bears the signatures of both Tryon and his son and partner, Edward K. Tryon, who attests that the mortgage was witnessed and sealed in his presence. Baldwin had earlier established E. A. Baldwin & Co. at Worcester, Massachusetts in 1855 to manufacture percussion "magazine" arms to his 1854, but no production is known by either firm.
