This rifle is featured and described as plate 30 from the Hunter collection in "Heritage Sampler" by Roy C. Buck and Richard Jones. George Slaysman was an early nineteenth century Huntingdon, Pennsylvania gunsmith and examples made by him are very rarely encountered. The rifle features an octagonal rifled barrel signed "G. Slaysman" in script on top flat. The flat lockplate is also inscribed "G. Slaysman". The rifle features brass furniture including an engraved four-piece patchbox, as well as a vacant silver oval wrist escutcheon and a crescent moon above the cheekpiece. Highly figured full length maple stock of familiar early Huntingdon form. Hickory ramrod probably a replacement. CONDITION: Good. The rifle was shortened during the period of use. The barrel retrains a gray patina with some edge wear and corrosion at breech. Signature shows some wear but is still visible. Lock has been professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration and retains an applied brown patina. Brass furniture shows some wear and scattered marks and retains a mellow, unpolished patina. The entry ferrule is missing its base. The stock has a pleasing orange color and has some scattered marks from use, as well as minor losses on forend on right side, a repair at the wrist and some losses between lock and barrel tang, as well as in front of the frizzen. Included is a copy of the pages featuring this rifle
