Small bore Remington shotguns are quite scarce, those of higher grade exceptionally so. It is possible that fewer than ten 16 bore EE Remington 1894's were made. This example has 30" barrels with matted concave rib. Tops of barrels are engraved "Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N. Y. U. S. A." "Ordnance". Barrel flats are stamped with serial number, lumps with pellet counts, "294" and "286", and bottoms of barrels "EEO". Case hardened boxlock action features automatic safety. pivoting third fastener, and double triggers. Action is engraved with near full coverage well cut shaded scroll surrounding scenes of game birds and dogs; left side has well detailed scene of pair of grouse, while a pointer and setter are on right side. Rear portions of action are engraved "REMINGTON ARMS CO" in arched ribbon over birds, with quail on left and snipe on right. Floorplate has scroll surrounding interesting scene of male ruffed grouse displaying while two hens take notice. Trigger guard with scroll on bow has serial number on tang. Finely marbled and figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock with fluted horn cap to grip measures 13 - 1/4" over Silver type pad. A gold oval is on toe line. Extensive fancy stock embellishment of this gun consists of closely spaced checkered side panels with arcaded borders to front and arrowhead drop points, as well as grip checkering with rounded borders consisting of two panels on each side, one of 26 line per inch checkering with cloverleaf intrusions behind drop points separating by arched ribbons with spear type intrusions into second panel of very fine checkering, probably 32 lines per inch. This very intricate pattern extends to forend with panels of coarse and fine checkering separated by arched and shaped ribbons. This splinter type forend is fitted with ejectors and has an Anson type release button. CONDITION: Very good, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a fine re-black. Action has traces of original case hardening color where protected on trigger plate and under top lever; balance silver gray. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish under added oil with installation of newer pad. Checkering worn, and has not been re-cut. Bores are very fine to excellent with some frosting toward breech ends. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are in time. An early and unique EE. This gun is pictured in REMINGTON DOUBLE SHOTGUNS by Charles E. Semmer on pages 192-195. MGM 129
