Rigbys produced a number of rifles on this patent. This well preserved example by Gasquoine & Dyson working ca 1846 - 78, at 26 Market Place, Manchester, has 23 - 1/2" two stripe Damascus slightly tapered octagon barrel with makers name and address on top flat. A one standing, two nested leaf express rear sight and silver bead front are dovetailed through. Bottom flat is stamped with serial number and London black powder proofs. Tip down action has threaded rotating breech section with butter knife type handle. A half turn of handle retracts boss which locks barrel, and also cocks hammer. Hammer is fitted with long needle fire nose made for an unknown cartridge (there is no provision for an extractor). Action is of boxlock type and is engraved with 70% coverage well cut large open shaded scroll with feather borders. Makers name is on scrolled riband on left side. Nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip, and a tiny silver vacant oval is on toe line. Matching, near fully checkered, small splinter forend with schnabeled horn tip attaches to barrel with captive side bolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. Gun is housed in its original sleeved case, rifle being held in mahogany tray lined in green cloth which slides into end of velvet lined leather outer cover which has carrying strap and brass lock. CONDITION: Very good to fine, original. Barrel retains most of its original brown with good definition to pattern. Action retains 20 - 30% original case hardening color, mostly where protected. A good amount of original blue remains on bolt, hammer, and trigger. Stocks retain most of their original finish with numerous light marks. Checkering lightly worn. Bore is good, lightly pitted, rifling strong. Mechanically fine. Case is generally good, leather dark, rubbed and scuffed. One retainer for handle is broken. Latch for lock missing. Interior cloth is good. MGM 228
