This early, massive, and fantastically engraved Tranter revolver, made between 1856-1886, has an 8 inch barrel with a drift adjustable front sight and a notched rear sight. The retailer marking on the top strap is "Gasquoine & Dyson/Market Place Manchester". On the right side of the frame appears "Adams' Patent No. 21029". British proofs on the left upper chamber flat and adjacent to each of the cylinder chambers. Lavish scroll covers the top flat with shorter islands of engraving on either side of the barrel. Most of the cylinder has been embellished as is either side of the frame, trigger guard, front strap, back strap, and butt. Intermixed with the scroll, over each of the cylinders, is a series of unique faces with skulls on the top strap and grotesques on either side of the barrel near the forcing cone and on the butt. As an early model Tranter, the hook of trigger extends below the trigger guard and is pulled with the middle finger, cocking the hammer and advancing the cylinder. A second trigger lies inside the trigger guard and is pulled by the index finger, to trip the sear. The left side of the trigger is marked with a reference to Tranter's patent. Walnut grips, finely checkered, secured with a single transverse screw, with checkered screw caps to blend into the surrounding surface. CONDITION: Approximately 90-95% bright original blue with sharp edge wear and scattered freckling as one might expect from light use. Fire blued small parts and trigger with commensurate fading and toning. Vg-ex grips with oil darkening and blunting, especially near the top, near the tang, where the checkering has been enhanced. Bright bore, oxidative flecking, sharp rifling. Timing needs adjustment as pulling trigger will cock and drop the hammer but not advance the cylinder. A great looking gun, sure to enhance your collection.
