Steyr made approx. 100 double action gas sealed revolvers for consideration by the Austrian military. Several variations have been noted in the cylinder design and some have been recorded with Wn97 Austrian military acceptance markings on the top strap. Arguably one of the most beautiful revolvers ever manufactured for military consideration, having a contrast of strawed and rust blued parts, immediate predessor to the more common M1895 Nagant Gas Seal Revolver.. This particular example has a 5.5" octagonal/ round barrel with a pinned half moon fire blued front sight and a fixed rear sight. Cylinder is cut with three series of notches; forward flutes are for lightening, the two rear most notches are to secure the cylinder with the hammer down and cylinder bolt when cocked. Tensioning bar on the right side of the frame. Markings are limited to the serial number "5" on the left side of the barrel, left frame, and rear face of cylinder. Main components rust blued. Strawed parts include cylinder, cylinder latch, ejector rod, hammer, tensioning bar, and the trigger. Checkered wood panels that are internally secured. Rotatable lanyard ring. Condition VG original condition with wear as one might expect from field testing and subsequent use. Comprabale condition, with fading and discoloration, of the strawed parts. Grips with coarse checkering, slightly blunted, with scattered dings. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. An exceptionally rare military test trial revolver, super early serial number, in a highly desireable configuration and totally original condition.
