Offered is a very scarce French six shot double action revolver. Features octagon barrel, non-fluted cylinder, blued finish, two piece ivory grips and lanyard ring. Barrel is decorated with a muzzle border design. Gold and silver design on top of frame with gold brads. Flat sides of barrel are engraved in a panel scene with flower and leaves, and stamped "ACIER FONDU". Maker's name on right side of barrel. Cylinder is decorated with flower type oval vignettes bordered by gold and silver borders with inlaid silver and gold brads. Frame is engraved in European type scroll. Trigger guard is engraved on frame. Same theme flows over to straps, front and back. CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 90% original high polish blue. Frame has a duller, case colored appearance where the finish has flaked off most of the engraving, giving off a dark grey-blue appearance. Straps are the same, as is trigger guard. Indexes correctly but return spring is spongey. Strong, rifled bore with minor abrasion. French fitted into an English oak case. Case includes small metal oil bottle, wood handled turnscrew, ebony handled cleaning jag, 20 empty cartridge cases and original key. Information on E. Pertuiset is difficult to find, but records indicate that he was a weapons inventor active in the immediate post-Civil War era and was most noted for creating explosive fillers for small arms projectiles; reportedly the Russian use of this invention led to the Saint Petersburg Declaration of 1868 banning exploding shells of less than 400 grams.
