This is a very rare factory engraved French Perrin revolver. Features deep scroll engraving on the frame, cylinder, grip cap, clyinder pin, swiveling ejector rod housing, trigger guard and barrel. The barrel pin which goes from side to side is too long and is a replacement. Standard wood grips. Matching numbers. This gun is housed in a period wood box with the "French lining" which fits the gun snugly. "L. PERRIN/ A?? LAFAITTE 51./ PARIS" in guilt on the inside of the lid. We do not believe the interior of the case to be original, although it does show some age. Ebony handled, brass tip cleaning rod. Next to the Raphael revolver, the French Perrin is probably the least often encountered Civil War import handgun. Like the Raphael, it was a 6-shot, double action revolver that fired a very advanced 12mm self-contained cartridge. Approximately 550 of these revolvers (of a contract for 1,0000) were delivered to the US Government by arms speculator Alexis Godillot at a price of $20.00 each in 1862. Due to the high grade of this gun, it is highly unlikely that this was included in the US Gov't contract arms. PROVENANCE: The Renown Collection of Howard Resnick. CONDITION: The gun retains a pleasing even age patina overall with sharp engraving. Fine mechanical function. Wood grip is fine with minor handling marks. Bore is fine with deep rifling. Case is solid, showing age to both the outside and interior with wear marks from the gun. Light handling marks on the exterior.
