30" Damascus barrels engraved with Westley Richards New Bond Street address on broad game rib which has dolls head extension. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with pre 1887 Birmingham black powder proofs. Bar-in-Wood action is of Westley Richards unique "crab joint" style, so named because both the action bar including pivot and forend iron are encased in wood. In order for the forend to hinge correctly it is fitted to the buttstock wood, the result is a hinged joint resembling the juncture of a crabs claw and arm. As with most early Westley Richards breechloading guns and rifles, the only locking bolt on this gun is Westley Richards patented top fastener which engages a slot in dolls head rib extension. Action is fitted with front spring, rebounding locks, with flat faced serpentine hammers having stylized dolphin heads. Firing pins are of 2 piece camming type. Action and lockplates are engraved with 70% coverage nicely cut scroll. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Fiddle figured European walnut stock measures 14 - 3/8" over checkered wood butt on 1 - 3/4" lengthening piece. Broadly spaced point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend with horn tip has Deeley release. CONDITION: Good. Barrels have brown patina, engraving considerably washed. Action and locks cleaned silver to gray. Stock has most of an old oil refinish. Checkering re-cut. Bores are fair to good, lightly pitted throughout, with evidence of many dents being removed, and a slight bulge 12" from breech end of right barrel. Action is tight. (A testament to the strength of this patent action.) Locks are fine. There is a repaired crack in buttstock wood behind forend. MGM 144
