This is an extremely unusual gun. Approximately .45 caliber percussion. Brass 6 chamber cylinder and trigger guard, the rest is made of iron. The right side of the frame is marked "PAT. MOD. NO. I". The left side of the frame is stamped "SHAWK/ & MACLANAHAN/ ST. LOUIS". The markings are questionable, especially considering that known Shawk & McLanahan revolvers do not seem to share any of the characteristics of this item, as well as the marking (which includes the additional "A" in the name on this gun). The gun is also marked "M8" in several places, and "M4" on the buttplate tang. The wood forend hinges down with the loading lever, although the lever doesn't quite go down far enough to be able to properly load the cylinder, nor is there enough clearance between the front of the cylinder and barrel in order to load it with the lever. 9 3/4 inch forend. 20 1/2 inch 3 groove rifled modified .45-70 Trapdoor Springfield barrel. A standard 1873 Trapdoor Springfield socket bayonet fits it perfectly. The loading lever assembly was welded to the bottom of this. Wood stock with iron buttplate. Someone clearly put a whole lot of time into making this item. Approximately 36 inches long, overall. CONDITION: Good as created. Does show some actual age, mixed with a chemically applied patina. Markings are sharp and clear. Wood is good with light handling marks. Bore is very good with strong rifling. The springs are a little weak, which makes the cylinder sometimes over rotate beyond its proper location and needs attention. Action at fault.
