Scarce Chamelot Delvigne 1873/1874 double action revolver with quick sideplate release as marketed/manufactured by Gerest of St Etienne. Standard configuration revolver with 4.5 inch octagonal/round barrel, having fixed front sight and grooved rear sight. Top barrel flat marked "Mle 1873." Full serial number on upper left flat, that is repeated on the cylinder axle, sideplate, and hammer. Front face of cylinder marked "13." Elsewhere is a partial "3." On the right side of the barrel and in one of the cylinder flutes is the St Etienne proofing. Right side of the barrel is marked with the manufacturing date 1874 with the right side of the frame marked with the manufacturer. Usual small inspector and acceptance markings. Novel to this particular revolver is the quick release lever mounted on the sideplate that was purportedly developed and sold by Gerest of St Etienne. Checkered wood panels, right side secured with a single screw and escutcheon. Lanyard ring with loop at base. CONDITION: Approximately 60% faded original finish with commensurate aging of the hammer and trigger. Left grip with small crack and loss at base; right panel is sound. Bright bore with very shallow rifling. Excellent manual mechanics. Very unusual M1873/74 transitional with quick sideplate release, a real treasure for any European revolver collector.
