This U.S. issue large Bowie knife/short sword is stamped on the right ricasso "US WD" for William Dickinson who inspected the Ames 1849 Rifleman's knife. His initials are also found on the heavy brass guard as well. You will also find the initials of sub-inspector "JWR" on guard for James W. Ripley who inspected the 1849 knife as well as some 1832 artillery swords. Left side of ricasso is stamped "AMES MFG CO CABOTVILLE 1849". This rare knife features large brass cross guard and one piece walnut pistol grip handle with three large pins and a lanyard hole. Only 1,000 of these knives were delivered in 1849. CONDITION: The blade has been sharpened, edges are dull and legends readable. Very scarce U.S. issue pre-Civil War knife.
