(1888 ?) Fine three stripe Damascus barrels are 34 " long and fitted with slightly raised broad concave game rib engraved with H&H New Bond Street address and Field Rifle Trial information. Barrel flats are stamped with pre-1888 London black powder proofs and London re-proofs for 3 - 1/4" chambers. Serial numbers are on bottoms of barrels. A wide sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened round bodied Jones underlever action is fitted with peninsula back spring locks with round bodied serpentine rebounding hammers. Action is filed in "best" manner and has long top strap which extends over comb. Action also features side clips, and double triggers (front "loose" to help avoid bumping ones trigger finger under recoil). Action and locks are engraved with 80% well cut small scroll with rose bouquet highlights. "Holland & Holland" is at the top of each lockplate. Trigger guard has serial number on tang which extends to horn grip cap in rifle fashion. Attractive, finely marbled and lightly fiddle figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over Silver type pad. Closely spaced flat top checkering is at grip. A vacant silver oval and a sling loop matching that on barrels are on toe line, which is also stamped with a registration number (?) "190". Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Most likely original leather case with brass corners and central medallion, is lined in royal blue cloth and has larger paper H&H label i lid. Gun fits case very well. Accessories include 2 piece rosewood and brass cleaning rod with 3" handle with ball head, horn handled striker key, horn handled turnscrew marked Holland & Holland, H&H marked round pewter oil bottle, Dixon broken case extractor, empty smokeless Diamond powder can, and an empty Youngs 303 oil can. Also in case is correspondence with the E C Powder Company regarding pellet counts and patterns thrown by this gun, and their suggested changes to increase efficiency (dated 1913). CONDITION: Excellent, mostly original. Barrels retain 85 -90% original Damascus finish with excellent definition to pattern. Action and locks retain approximately 70% original case hardening color, silvered by normal hand wear at usual contact points. Stocks retain most of their original finish with many marks and scratches, most loss to inexpert fitting of newer pad, with associated scuffing and subsequent cleaning of rear portion of butt. Bores are very fine, shiny with some scattered pitting. Action is tight. Locks are crisp. Case leather is still relatively light in color with some water staining, rubs, and bumps. Original straps are good. Handle is good, re-stitched. Interior cloth is fine with some slight insect damage in edges of lid, with some rubs in bottom compartment. Accessories are generally very good to fine. A fine big, old Holland with great dimensions. MGM157
