(1840) (listed in the Westley Richards "Auxiliary Muzzle Loading Ledger" for second quality guns) This robust waterfowler has 36" beautifully patterned Damascus barrels with broad concave game rib engraved "Westley Richards 170 New Bond St. London." Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs for 8 bore (.848 muzzle diameter). An ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under tail) is held by two plain pipes. Case hardened breech plugs have vented platinum blow-outs. Serials numbers are on hooks.Case hardened breech iron is line border engraved. Front spring locks are fitted with tall flat faced serpentine hammers. Locks and hammers are also line border engraved. "Westley Richards" is at the top of each plate. Stump figured somewhat marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13 - 3/4" over steel buttplate with short top spur. Trigger plate has stylized pineapple finial. Steel trigger guard has serial number on tang. Stock is checkered in point pattern at grip and forend. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Stock attaches to barrels with two captive side bolts through oval silver escutcheons. CONDITION: Excellent, original. Barrels retain approximately 80% original brown on Damascus with good definition to pattern, with some fading to pattern. browning and flecking from normal use on sides toward breech ends, and with some scattered light marks and dings. All other metal parts retain over 80% original light case hardening color with some dark splotches mostly on left lock. Color fading and browning to approximately 30% on trigger guard and thimble. Color on buttplate remains strong at over 60%. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish with some small dents and light scratches, perhaps with some oil added. Checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent, shiny but with some light rusting in right barrel (should clean). A very fine big bore waterfowler, not normally found in high condition. MGM 164
