This trade musket features a two-stage smoothbore steel barrel. The left side of the breech is stamped with commercial Gunmaker's Gild proofs, as well as "WK" for maker William Ketland. The rounded lockplate has double-line borders, marked "W KETLAND" in center and engraved at tail with a boar's head and bugle. The barrel is retained by three brass bands, the front band retained by a spring. The rest of the furniture is of iron including trigger guard with acorn finial, sideplate engraved with bows and arrows, buttplate and a high relief wrist escutcheon with a lions face. Full length walnut stock of familiar English form. At one time, it was decorated extensively with brass tacks of which only two remain. CONDITION: Good. Barrel retains a gray patina with scattered freckling and pitting overall. Lock retains a heavy brown patina with some freckling and has been professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration. Steel mounts show some corrosion and retain a dark patina, buttplate has especially heavy corrosion. Stock shows wear, heavy use and scattered marks, some chipping around buttplate tang. Steel ramrod appears to be of the period but not original.
