(Action ca 1936) This beautifully appointed rifle was built on a double square solid sidewall standard length commercial Mauser action, and has 24" medium weight barrel fitted with quarter rib holding one standing, four folding leaf express rear sight. Rib is cut for Ruger type rings and is file cut at rear portion and scroll engraved at front. A banded on sling eye and front sight ramp are installed. Ramp is fitted with H&H type folding sight protector and gold bead with flip-up night bead. Top of barrel is engraved "THOMAS C MORROW" "FREEDOM, NEW HAMPSHIRE", Rear portion "9.3 x 64 BRENNEKE". Tom Morrow was a Griffin & Howe trained "smith" working in NH from the 1970's through the early '90's, recently deceased. Mauser 98 action is unaltered and has turned down pear shaped bolt knob, and flag safety engraved "S". Original bottom metal has hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow. Bottom metal is engraved with 80% coverage well cut shaded scroll. There is more scroll on bow surrounding flush gold inlaid roaring lion. Engravers initials "SML" (Simon Litton) are behind rear guard screw hole. Superbly fiddle figured and nicely marbled flesh-toned European walnut steel capped pistol grip stock measures 14 - 3/8" over checkered wood butt with nicely fitted horn heel and toe plates. Stock features case hardened and engraved recoil bolts, horn forend tip, right hand double beaded cheekpiece, exceptionally well cut point pattern checkering at grip and forend, and a sling eye matching that on barrel, on bottom. Steel trap grip cap is case hardened and engraved. Rifle is equipped with Burris 3 - 9 X EER scope with duplex reticle in engraved Ruger style rings. Weight without scope: 9 lbs 1 oz. Rifle comes with green canvas full length case with dark brown leather trim lined in red felt. A covered compartment contains scope cover and keys. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining nearly all original custom finishes on wood and metal, with only a few very light markings mostly in wood. Case hardening of grip cap is considerably flaked. Bore is excellent. Action is smooth. Case is excellent. A fine medium to dangerous game rifle, well thought out. MGM 168
