This is a very interesting item. Designed to be mounted vertically, most likely attached to a post or tree stump. The trigger mechanism would have been attached to a trip wire, firing a flare straight up and thereby illuminating the area in which the device was set off. In the trenches of WWI this would have been an invaluable tool to alert of an oncoming attack through no man's land. Somewhat crudely manufactured, this was designed for utilitarian purposes rather than aesthetics. Brass and steel construction. Belgian proofed on the top of the barrel and receiver. The barrel swings open to the side for loading. The brass trigger, which would be attached to a trip wire, is designed to be fired from "up and down" movement when holding it flat, rather than lateral play. All in all a very unique and interesting relic of the WWI style of trench warfare. PROVENANCE: The Renowned Collection of Howard Resnick. CONDITION: Fine in as found condition. All parts retain a pleasing patina with clear markings. Bore has some rust. Fine mechanical function.
