According to the letter from Herbert Houze, well-known writer and Winchester curator, he writes "with respect to your letter of June 9th, approximately two dozen sample models for the Model 52 Type C were built by Winchester between late 1949 and the final months of 1950. These rifles were numbered sequentially with the letter 'SM' for sample model. After their completion, the rifles were distributed to various members of the Winchester Company's development as well as sales staff for technical evaluation and general testing. Winchester archives indicate that serial number SM2 was charged out to V.J. Tiefenbrunn of the sales department. He received one of the first samples of the proposed Type C Model 52 rifle as he was instrumental in promoting its development. Given its construction and original purpose, your Model 52, serial number SM2, is of considerable technical and historical importance. Futhermore, it is a true rarity of the Model 52 line." Gun itself features a full heavy barrel, blued finish, one piece walnut stock, Redfield Olympic front and rear sights, scope block, three sling swivels, lower forearm adjustable bar. CONDITION: Metal retains 97% of its original finish with light handling marks. Stock is excellent with a few usual dings and a professional repair at front of wood. Fine bore and action. Truly rare, one of a kind Model 52 Type C target rifle.
