This is an extremely early, first year production, three-digit serial number Open Top rifle. That it survived at all is amazing given the use these saw. Features knife blade front sight, 1876 dated rear ladder sight, walnut stocks and buttplate. CONDITION: All metal on this gun is a smooth, grey clean patina with sharp barrel legend. Someone has painted on a brown substance to give it a patina looks and is all freckled. Could be easily removed which would give it a nice grey look. Loading lever still has some blue finish. No case colors on hammer. Wood is very good, slightly shy and some horse pommel wear at bottom near frame. Buttstock is shy and you can see the metal above the wood but fits perfectly at wrist. There is a light 2" hairline crack on right side that is barely visible. Action is fine. Fairly good defined rifling with black powder abrasion in grooves. By removing the brown substance and some attention to the stock this would be an outstanding example of a first year production 1876.
