(ca 1953) 21 - 1/2" Medium weight barrel is fitted with sleeved on rear island base holding one standing, one folding leaf express sight, partially sleeved on sling eye, and front ramp fitted with H&H type folding sight protector with silver bead. Top of barrel is engraved "Holland & Holland. 98. New Bond Street, London." Rear portion is engraved "Holland's" ".375 "MAGNUM"" "Rimless" "Cartridge" ""HYKRO" Steel". Standard length FN Model 98 Mauser action has had H&H style scope mounts installed. Bolt with turned down handle has shroud fitted with low scope safety marked "SAFE". A Timney trigger has been fitted. Aluminum drop box bottom metal has hinged floorplate engraved "4 Cartridges" at front end, and "MODELE DE LUXE" on riband at center, retained by button in trigger guard bow which is engraved with serial number. The action on this rifle is near fully engraved on receiver ring and bridge with large open shaded acanthus scroll. This scroll extends to bottom metal. Flourishes of scroll are on scope mounts and bolt handle. Rifle takes down with coin slotted front guard screw. Barrel and action lift out. Nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut pistol grip stock measures 14" over Silver type pad and features shadow line right hand cheekpiece, recoil bolt, classically styled point pattern checkering, with a vacant gold oval and sling eye on toe line. Engraved steel grip cap has trap. Weight without scope: 8 lbs 1 oz. Rifle is accompanied by Zeiss Diavari V 1.5 - 6 X 30mm scope with duplex reticle in H&H rings serial numbered to this rifle. Gun is housed in old black silk cloth covered case with riveted on leather corners. Interior is lined in green cloth and has gold embossed H&H label in lid. Also included is a roll-on travel duffel by Orvis which holds aluminum gun case. A leather Westley Richards label is on top of bag. CONDITION: Excellent, as refinished, most likely by factory with installation of newer scope and mounts, and retaining nearly all "best" finishes applied at that time, with only a very few subsequent handling and assembly marks. Bore is excellent. Action is smooth. Scope is excellent, close to "as new". Old case shows considerable wear, straps good, handle partially detached. Interior cloth is good. Some partitions moved to accommodate scope. New travel case is excellent. This good handling rifle was most likely recently fitted out with a Safari in mind. MGM 198
