This interesting rifle has a Lehigh County, Pennsylvania profile with a Roman-nose buttstock. It was probably made for Pennsylvania militia use. The octagonal barrel is stamped "J.S. BAKER/PHILA" and has the Lehigh County sight, centered on the block and with stamped borders on both sides. The lock is a period replacement and is converted to percussion, center marked "A.W. SPIES/WARRANTED". The brass furniture includes a military 1803 Harper's Ferry or Shuler type sideplate and a four-piece brass patchbox, engraved with borders and foliate designs. The trigger guard has a lug in front of the bow in the Lehigh style. The full-length stock is of figured maple. Complete with period replacement ramrod. CONDITION: Good, iron surfaces have a dark freckled patina. Heavier corrosion at the breech along with a cone-in-breech conversion hole which was filled during period of use. Brass retains a dark patina with some scattered marks from use. Stock has some splintering and minor cracking along forend and a small piece missing in front of lockplate. Overall, a very nice as-found Pennsylvania militia musket.
