It is estimated that Ithaca Gun Company made at least three try guns, designed by employee Arthur P. Curtis. The Flues Model single barrel trap was introduced in 1914. It underwent three design changes to the locking system. This gun is of the third, and most common, variation. It has a 34" barrel with matted ventilated rib. Polished barrel flats are stamped with serial number. Case hardened action with flues type under bolt and third pattern crossbolt triple fastening, is engraved with usual 4-E large shaded acanthus within geometric borders. It does not have normal sporting vignettes, however "Ithaca" is inlaid in white gold on both sides. This treatment is known on other factory try guns. Blued trigger guard has scroll on bow. Stock is specially made with two piece aluminum breech section with knuckle joint for adjusting for drop at heel and cast. Drop at comb and Monte Carlo, as well as length of pull and pitch are adjusted by knurled wheels inset mounted in recesses in stock. Thick buttplate is of red hard rubber. This gun is shootable to check adjustments. Many try guns are not. Modified point pattern checkering is at grip. A similar try gun is pictured on page 120 of "The Ithaca Gun Company, From the Beginning" (copyright 1991) by Walt Snyder. Matching reverse tapered beaver tail ejector forend has inset ebony tip and push button release and Fleur-de-Lis border checkering. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel retains approximately 90% original blue, with some light marks. Action retains 90-95% original case hardening color, and silvered on high edges from normal hand wear. Trigger guard retains nearly all of its original blue with some loss due to flaking. Stocks retain over 90% of what appears to be their original finish, with some light marks. Aluminum of breech section has some light scratches. Checkering is lightly worn and has not been re-cut. Bore is excellent. Action is tight. Ejector is strong. A fine rare Ithaca trap.
