Boyle & Gamble made swords for the Confederacy and were located in Richmond, Virginia near the Old Virginia Arsenal. The sword is in the style of Boyle & Gamble and features a slightly curved blade with shallow partial fuller on each side and devoid of any markings. The crudely cast hilt is typical of the Boyle & Gamble staff sword and has a brass guard with "CS" below a star surrounded by a wreath. The wooden grip is covered with thin brown leather and wrapped with a single strand of copper wire separating the wide sections. The sword is complete with a black leather scabbard with brass mounts. The top mount has been replaced and is marked on left side with Ames markings. The other mounts appear to be of lesser quality and Southern made. CONDITION: Fair. Blade retains a spotted grey patina with scattered areas of heavy corrosion and dark freckling. The hilt retains a mostly dark, unpolished patina. Grip retains about 40-50% of its original leather covering, otherwise showing wood exposed. Scabbard is very good with a crazed surface with some scuffing and marks from use. Mounts retain a very dark, unpolished patina. Replaced throat mount is loose.
