This beautiful engraved Colt 1861 Navy features the wolf head engraved hammer. Frame is engraved with typical scroll and punch dot. Brass trigger guard and backstrap with engraving on all highlight areas. Cylinder is a non-rebated six shot with 5/8" scroll engraved band. Barrel has identical scroll and punch dot engraving on both sides with border around barrel address. Grips are checkered ivory with an eagle on left side. Full or partial matching numbers on frame, trigger guard, backstrap, barrel, cylinder and wedge. The style of engraving from the cylinder to the scroll leaf engraving with the cross hatch edging looks very similar to that of L.D. Nimschke, which you can see these examples beginning on page 210 in the book "Colt Engraving" by Wilson. There is an 1860 Army on page 211 where the cylinder band looks almost identical. CONDITION: Gun is basically grey patina with no real noticeable amounts of any original finish, with the exception of some case colors in the recess of the loading lever. There is holster wear to the muzzle. Cylinder has all the original nipples and safety pins are gone. Wedge is loose and does not stay in; wedge set screw is worn and needs replaced. Lever appears to be a replacement. The grips have shrunk quite a bit with age cracks, plug repair on right side, checkering smooth, repaired crack on right side and repaired piece on left front toe; fit nicely at straps and base but are quite shy at top of frame. A talented gunsmith could perform the work on these to bring them back to life. Gun indexes and locks up correctly. Well-defined rifled bore with usual minor residue.
