This high quality French target pistol features a Damascus octagonal smoothbore steel barrel with patent hooked breech. Adjustable front sight and fixed rear sight mounted on tang. The barrel is marked across the top three flats with silver inlaid letters "FNI PAR/ GOSSET/A PARIS". There are also two silver bands at the back of the patent breech. Flat, case hardened lock is finely engraved with a large bird with a large bird standing under a tree and the maker's name engraved in the center. The hammer is engraved with foliate scrolls. Steel furniture includes side plate engraved with two swans meeting below the lock screw, trigger guard features a floral finial and the bow is engraved with a heron, and pommel cap is engraved with a flower. Partially figured walnut half stock featuring a relief carved shell on the forend, relief carved acanthus leaves around the pommel, and features checkering around the wrist. The pistol has a set trigger. CONDITION: Very Good. Barrel retains a gray patina with some dark spotting and edge wear, tang has generous traces of case colors. Lock retains about 80% of bright colors, with some areas faded to gray. Springs are strong and function well. Furniture retains almost all of darkened case colors. Stock is good, with some added finish, scattered marks from use and a crack stemming from the front of the lock plate to the tip of the forend.
