This example dates circa 1790. Features a straight tapered blade with single fuller on each side. Right side is engraved with scrolls near the top of the blade and the left side is engraved with scrolls and a rampant lion. S-shaped guard with counter guard branch on right side. Fluted ebony handle with brass ferrule at bottom and faceted brass pommel with turned capstan. The front of the guard is stamped with maker's mark "FT" for Francis Thurkle on left side. This dirk is complete with its original black leather scabbard with tooled cross hatching on the front, brass mounts, throat mount with a frog stud. CONDITION: Fair as found and untouched. Blade retains a light grey patina with some areas of dark spotting and corrosion. All brass retains a dark patina. Grip is excellent. The counter guard is bent. Scabbard retains a cracked surface with some losses at the tip and drag absent. Throat mount missing hanging ring. This is a very nice British Naval dirk.
