Straight double edged steel blade with long etched panels and partial fullers on both sides. The right side is decorated with oak leaves, scrolls and an American eagle under and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner. The opposite side is engraved en suite around crossed flags with a liberty pole. Near the ricasso is an oval engraved "Ames Mfg Co/ Chicopee/ Mass". Gilt brass guard displays an eagle with its wings spread above shield languets. The gilt brass pommel is a close helmet with a large plume on top and two gilt bras chains extend from the left side of the guard to the pommel. Mother of Pearl grip scales wrapped with gilt brass wire. Complete with original gilt brass diamond section scabbard engraved with acanthus leaves on right side near drag and around hanging rings, left side of scabbard marked near throat with Ames markings. CONDITION: Excellent. Blade retains almost all of its original polish with scattered areas of grey freckling and some marks from scabbard. Hilt retains approximately 90-95% original gilt finish with some high edge wear and wear on grip straps. Scabbard retains 95-98% original gilt finish with some minor areas of discoloration and minor denting on both sides. This is a very attractive and high condition example of a militia officer's presentation sword. This sword is very similar to the example shown on page 149 of "The Ames Sword Company" by John D. Hamilton.
