Curved steel blade with two partial fullers on each side. Etched panel on right side displays cannons, pole arms, armor and flags and is marked at the top "W.H./ HORSTMANN/ & SONS/ PHILADELPHIA". The left side shows stands of arms, one with a patriotic shield. Spine is etched with repeating leaf patterns. Gilt brass hilt in the French style. Chagrin grip decorated with three strands of silver and brass wire. Complete with original nickel plated steel scabbard. This sword is similar to the example shown on page 232 of John H. Thillmann's "Civil War Cavarly and Artillery Sabers." CONDITION: Very good. Blade retains almost all of original polish with some scattered light freckling and some dark spots around ricasso. Hilt retains a mellow patina with generous traces of gilt finish in protected areas. Grip very good with some light wear. Scabbard is excellent with no denting and grey freckling overall with a few flaked areas. Throat screw is absent.
