This well-made Confederate Cavalry saber features a curved steel blade, unmarked and with long shallow partial fuller on each side. The cast brass hilt features two branches and is very similar in style to the Model 1860 Ames Cavalry saber. The back of the guard on top is stamped "MEMPHIS/ NOVELTY WOR/ THOS LEECH & CO". The leather covered grip is wrapped with twisted copper wire. Sword is complete with its original steel scabbard with brass mounts including drag and throat. The original leather washer still remains between the blade and the guard. CONDITION: Very good. Blade retains an unpolished spotted grey patina and shows some edge wear from scabbard. Hilt retains a dark, unpolished patina and markings are very good to excellent. Grip is very good. Scabbard retains a dark patina overall with some denting. This is a very scarce Confederate Cavalry saber and is accompanied by several important pieces of documentation including an authentication letter from Frederick R. Edmunds of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The letter describes the sword in great detail and is on a Confederate States Armory Museum letterhead.
