This French imported sword is a copy of the Ames Model 1860 Cavalry officer's saber. It features a polished steel blade with partial fullers and long etched panels on both sides. The right side shows crossed cannons and flags as well as scrollwork and is stamped with two French proof marks on the ricasso. The French inscription is present on the spine. The left side of the blade features a large "U.S." as well as a patriotic shield and crossed flags and polearms. The cast brass hilt is decorated in the style of an 1860 Cavalry officer's saber with chase decoration on both sides in the front of the branches, as well as on the back of the quillon and around the pommel. The front of the guard is stamped with a small "E.L." cartouche. The shagrin wrapped grip is decorated with twisted strands of brass wire. The sword is complete with its brass mounted steel scabbard. This sword is nearly identical to number 1 on page 259 of "Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers" by John H. Thillmann. CONDITION: Very good. The blade retains most of its original polish and shows only a few light grey areas of spotting and discoloration. Hilt retains an unpolished patina with some areas of darker patina. Grip is excellent. Scabbard retains a light grey patina with some dark freckles, brass mounts are unpolished, and there is no denting. A nice imported 1860 Cavalry officer's sword.
