Troop "A", also known as the 1st City Troop, the 1st Cleveland Cavalry, and the Black Horse Troop, was an independent military organization established after the Railroad Strike of 1877 raised fears about the ability of the militia to maintain law and order. On August 29, 1887, members of the cavalry troop voted unanimously to become a unit in the Ohio National Guard. Group consists of: Pill box cap of blue and yellow wool with brass letter "A" on its crown. Leather sweatband and black cotton lining. Triple breasted tunic with matching Ohio buttons, yellow worsted wool frogging, yellow collar and cuff trim and yellow worsted wool knotted epaulettes. Sky blue wool trousers with 1" yellow stripe on the outer seams, belted rear, watch and rear pockets. Black patent leather cartridge box adorned with brass crossed sabers with letter "A" above and "OHIO" below. Cross strap with brass tab and buckle. CONDITION: Tunic, trousers and cap exhibit minor mothing and a few small repairs, cartridge box leather is supple and in excellent condition. From the Ray Bentley collection.
