20" round barrel, full blue finish, 4X checkered walnut stocks with pistol grip and crescent buttplate. Barrel shows two line Winchester address and patent mark rolled on left side at mid-point. Model, California and Winchester trademark are rolled on left side at breech. “WP” proof is struck on top of barrel and on top of receiver. Serial number appears on bottom front of frame adjacent to matching number on trigger guard. Rifle is equipped with a Watson globe front sight with post bead. Sight is marked “Watson”. Barrel has no provision for rear sight. Upper tang is mounted with an adjustable tang peep sight. Rifle was most likely engraved by George Ulrich, who worked from 1919-1949. Barrel shows no engraving. Forend cap has decoration around screw with a line border. Receiver shows a vignette of squirrels on a tree branch which is a classic Ulrich motif. Vignette is bordered by scroll engraving. Receiver has a dental border around edge. All engraving has line accents. Right side of receiver shows a vignette of hares, another classic Ulrich motif. Vignette is also bordered by scroll engraving. Receiver has a dental border with line accents. Top of receiver has simple scroll decoration at front and rear, also with a dental border on front edge. Stocks are checkered in the factory “H” diamond pattern style. Factory research shows serial number applied December 21st, 1929; no other information available. CONDITION: This gun was masterfully restored at some point to as new condition using original finishes. Barrel retains 80% of the slightly faded blue finish overall with some stains toward the breech. Watson sight is very good with clear mark. Barrel marks are sharp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Receiver retains 90% bright blue finish with most of the wear at carry point, trigger guard, and on high-points. Engraving and markings are sharp. Rear peep sight show most of the blue finish. Mechanics are crisp. Stocks are fine with sharp checkering and show almost all of the professionally refreshed varnish finish with only minuscule handling marks overall. Toe of stock shows a small repair. A very attractive Winchester Model 03 rifle made in 1931, toward the end of George Ulrich’s career at Winchester.
