This is an extremely clean unit stamped Model 1884 Trapdoor, correct in all aspects including built in rod bayonet, Model 1884 rear sight, and "VP" eagle proofed barrel. Block is stamped "US MODEL 1884". Sideplate stamped "SPRINGFIELD US" with eagle. Left side of stock has "SWP 1891" cartouche for Sam Porter. Script "P" in circle on wrist. Unit marked 88 with white paint on top of wrist. Rack number 23 on right side of stock. CONDITION: Barrel and bands are a smooth, clean, soft blue-brown homogeneous patina with no roughness. Case colors on block have patterned out. Stock is excellent with just a few minor usual handling marks. Action is fine. Near mint bore. A wonderful example of a used but well cared for 1884 Trapdoor.
