Approximately 8,200 manufactured 1863 to 1864. Manufactured in Hamilton, Ohio. This is a Type II which constituted approximately 4,000 examples. A total of 13 contracts for this carbine were issued by the US Government to include the 7th Tennessee, 5th and 8th Ohio, 4th and 8th Missouri, 3rd Wisconsin, 2nd and 3rd Iowa, 2nd and 3rd Arkansas; 5th, 6th and 16th Illinois; 2nd, 5th and 14th Kansas; and 10th, 12th and 14th Kentucky. All of these were issued to the Cavalry. Features octagon to round barrel, folding ladder rear sight, post front sight, saddle ring and bar, walnut buttstock with rifle butt. No forend. Matching numbers. Right side of frame is stamped "UNION RIFLE". Numerous inspector stamps. CONDITION: Metal is basically a brown patina. Carbine is missing the lever catch and top screw. Walnut stock is very good with light hairline crack and grain is opening up. Razor sharp stampings. Fairly scarce, widely used Civil War carbine that just needs some attention to some missing parts, a few damaged screws; this would also put it in working order as presently the lever won't close.
