This is a beautiful little original 1873 saddle ring carbine that was proofed by Samuel Porter in 1880, stamped on left side of stock, which is a "ten". Has the cursive "P" on butt, proper 1873 carbine marked sight, standard post front sight, proper saddle ring and bar on left side, single "US" barrel band, proper "US" marked trapdoor buttplate with three piece cleaning rod. No sling swivels. Barrel has the VP eagle head proof. Block is stamped "US MODEL 1873". Has the thumbprint knurling on hammer. Blued sideplate has "US SPRINGFIELD" and eagle. CONDITION: Barrel is a beautiful blend of blue and soft patina coming through finish. Block has turned silvery on outside with generous case colors underneath. Hammer and sideplate retain 90% original blue coming through and light age freckling. Trigger guard is blue-grey patina. All screw heads are near perfect. Walnut stock is outstanding with just a few usual surface handling marks. Action is as new. Strong and shiny bore. Far above average early Indian Wars trapdoor saddle ring carbine; collectible grade.
