Manufactured 1977. Referred to as the "Chief's Special", this is a five shot with fluted cylinder, round butt, J frame, pinned barrel, factory blue finish, case colored hammer and trigger, and silver medallion checkered walnut grips. Another interesting aspect of this revolver is that it is stamped "MADE IN USA" on backstrap, with offset "A" the box is serial numbered to gun and is listed with swivel. This is a very rare US Navy contract revolver. Initially ordered as a 2,000 gun order however 112 additional guns where produced as a contract overrun. Later sold by Smith & Wesson but "MADE IN" and the letter "A" was added to the "US" marking on backstrap to identify these from the US Property contracted guns. This is one of the 112 sold by Smith & Wesson and is discussed in The Supica/Nahass book of Smith & Wesson. CONDITION: There is a light drag line and a couple of handling marks but is near new inside and out with paperwork. Very unusual revolver.
