Referred to as the "Mississippi Rifle," approximately 15,000 of these contract rifles were manufactured from 1848-1853 in Windsor, Vermont. Lockplate is stamped "WINDSOR VT" and dated 1847. Has the manufacturer name and "US" on lockplate. Features brass mountings to include one band, forend tip, patchbox, buttplate, and trigger guard. Does not have the VP Eagle Head. This model owes its nickname to its success when used by a Mississippi regiment under Jefferson Davis during the Mexican War. Left side of stock has two beautiful inspector cartouches that are visible but not readable. CONDITION: Barrel is beautifully browned. Wood is in excellent condition with minor use. Good brass that has been cleaned, nice screws. Has a "P" on left side of barrel. Lockplate retains a blue-grey appearance. Wood has had some added finish. Bore is mirror shiny with perfect rifling. An extremely handsome example of a popular rifle used in both the Mexican War and Civil War.
