This musket is pictured on page 24 of "Massachusetts Military Shoulder Arms: 1784-1877" by George D. Moller. Daniel Dana worked in Canton, Massachusetts and manufactured a variant of armory pattern muskets with an 1808 U.S. contract style lock stamped only "D. DANA" as this example has. The musket features a tapered round smoothbore barrel with bayonet lug fitted on top near muzzle. Top of breech stamped "P M". The flat lockplate is stamped "D. DANA" forward of cock. Plain brass mounts, wrist escutcheon with punch dot initials "J-P". Full length stock of partially figured walnut with carved panels around lock and sideplate. Complete with original steel ramrod. This is a very nice War of 1812 New England militia musket. CONDITION: Good. Barrel and lock have been chemically cleaned and retain a grey patina with scattered areas of light corrosion overall, heavier at breech. Lock is in original flintlock configuration and functions well. Brass has also been cleaned and now retains a mellowing patina. Stock shows some scattered marks from use and area of loss under nosecap on left side and wrist has been broken and repaired.
