This rifle falls right into the 10,000 serial number range of C30,000-C40,000. No lug and is instead adopted for socket bayonet, a mere 6,150 were ever manufactured and most saw heavy use in the Civil War, as did this example. Features three barrel bands with forend tip, military post front sight, Lawrence stamped rear ladder sight. Barrel is stamped "Sharps Rifle Manufacture Company Hartford Conn." Breech is stamped "Model 1863". Serial number on tang, patent dates on both sides of frame. Numerous military inspector marks to include: "MNM" block letters on left side of barrel standing for Moses N. Marshall. Other initials include "M" on left side of frame, "M" on hammer, "M" on lever. CONDITION: Metal is a dark chocolate brown; attic found. Stock has numerous dents that are as old as the gun. One replaced screw on right side. Strong clean razor sharp lands visible in the rifled bore. This rifle definitely saw lots of service and comes to you in as found condition. Complete and original. One of the rarest Civil War sharps that entered into production mid-war and saw two to three years of hard service.
